Bipolar Disorder/Bipolar alternative meds

Question
I have Bipolar disorder, OCD, and I can't sleep. I am currently taking Paxil, Welbutrin, and Lamictal. I was on Serequel for years but my legs began cramping after consuming. I went to Klonipin which made me dumber than a stump. Then I took Ambien but it makes me sleep walk, talk, eat, and shop. I am off of that. I am weening myself off of Lamictal and would like to take a Holistic approach. I don't have the energy that I had years prior. Difficult time keeping a job and getting up in the morning. I am at my witts end with all this medication. I was diagnosed 10 yrs ago. It's difficult to feel good about yourself after losing job after job. (home, and vehicle). What do you think about the holistic approach? I am leary about it but it has to be better than this...P.S. I've been on most of the meds prior to this recipe.

Answer
Hi Nancy,

I am sorry to hear that you're having trouble with sleep despite trying out various meds.  I'm not sure exactly what your definition of a "Holistic approach" is but in my humble view, to stay well, life in general and self-management in particular do have to be approached holistically.

Sleep is essential so I fully empathize with your troubles in keeping a job and getting up in the morning.  Your e-mail mainly focused on meds, so I'm not sure how you are managing the other aspects of self-management?  Perhaps, have another look at regulating diet and activity (both passive, e.g. playing a musical instrument or art, and active, e.g. exercise).  These have a dramatic impact on one's level of wellness (both physical and mental).

Also, it seems that you've had trouble with insomnia for a while.  Is there a contributing factor that hasn't been addressed, e.g. a particular stressor / trigger in your life?  If so, talking to a therapist about this might help as well.

It is indeed difficult to feel good after losing much, but please hold on.  Your persistence in getting better will eventually pay off.  I sincerely hope things get better for you.  Do write back if you have further questions.

All the best!
Joanne

Expertise

I can answer questions pertaining to coping well with mental illness, being most familiar with bipolar disorder. I focus on approaching life from a wellness model and strongly believe that, with the right approach (sufficient insight coupled with positive action and adequate support), individuals with bipolar disorder can lead meaningful, purpose-driven lives. I am most happy to help by way of providing clinical information / psychoeducation, practical suggestions, and a third-party (hopefully, objective) point-of-view to increase insight. I am not medically-trained and am therefore not qualified to answer specific prescription-related questions.

Experience

I am an Australian graduate with an Honours degree (Class I) in psychology and plan to eventually pursue a PhD in clinical psychology. I have for several years been in close contact with patients with bipolar disorder, either as a relative or as a volunteer with various charity arrangements, and would like to provide more support to this group of patients.
