Question
QUESTION: I have an 8 yr old son who has intermitten explosive disorder. He is on medicatio for it.He is always back talking, and telling me and his sisters what to do.It's like he expects us to wait on him hand and foot.We are all scared of him,and not sure what to do.It has caused alot of stress between my oldest, and I.My Oldest is ready to move out,and has done tried to run away. What do i do.

ANSWER: Hello Amanda:

I'd reconsider the medication your son is on for one thing. If he is still having violent  (verbally or physically) outbursts, than the medication is not working. The bossiness could be increased because of his age--many eight year old boys go through that phase.

Also, make a list of unacceptable behavior-start with the worst 2-3 behaviors.  Set consequences in advance and let your son know these behaviors will not be tolerated and will result in consequences-and then follow through.

What may be adding to the behavior is your fear. He knows you are afraid of him, and is using that as leverage. Try not to show the fear. Stare him down if necessary.

Finally-get an appointment and try to get his medication changed!

QUESTION: I have tried to explain to the psychiatrist about this, and he tells me because there is no trouble during school that the problem is at home. How do I get the doctor to hear myside. The medicine has caused my son to gain alot of weight, and the doctor tells me his system is backedup.I've tried other methods of relieving him of this problem.

Answer
Amanda:

It is time to search for a different doctor.  If the doctor involved with your child will not listen to the person who is most aware of what is going on, you need to change.  It may be difficult to find another doctor, but will be well worth the time and effort.
