Question
My son age 43 was diagnosed with bipolar disorder two years ago, now it seems that a daughter age 42 will be diagnosed the same. Another daughter age 44 had frequent angry outbursts towards me over 5 years ago.  These were not reasonable or justified in any way. In one angry outburst she said She had no mother and did not want to see me again. This has meant that I have not seen 3 small grandsons for 5 years.  Is it possible that 3 out of my four children could have the disorder? The fourth child is an identical twin to the first daughter mentioned here with no symptoms at all.

Answer
HI Maureen,

There about six different ways in which a genetic condition can be passed on to the next generation. If you want to study this I recommend that you read:

Crash Course in genetics by Dr Chris Reading, 8 at:

Please particular attention to to the sex linked chromosome at page 16.
