Question
I'm 14 and I'm sure i have depression, but i was wondering what my chances of anything more severe like Bipolar Disorder or anything else. There was substance abuse on both sides of my family, but I've never done drugs or alcohol although both of my parents are alcoholics and one is sober. My mother is and has been diagnosed with depression for a long time. My grandmother has Bipolar Disorder and so does my greatgrandmother. I'm not sure about my dad. Do you know how likely it is that I'll become worse? It's hard dealing with depression as it is as a teenager so i want to be atleast a little ready if one day i end up with BPD.

Answer
Hi Chelsey,

Because of  your age I do not think that you are Bipolar. There are many other conditions that should be eliminated before concluding you are Bipolar.

Having parents who have suffered from substance abuse, it is possible that you may have inherited a weak gene, but genes can be beaten by nutritional means. Please test yourself with the

The Nutrition-Behavior Inventory Questionnaire (NBI) at:
http://www.hypoglycemia.asn.au/articles/nutrition-behavior_inventory.html

and the

The Hypo Quizz at:
http://www.hypoglycemia.org/hypo_test.asp

'If you score high it may be positive for hypoglycemia. This an be treated by going on a hypoglycemic diet. Please discuss with a Nutritional Doctor, Clinical Nutritionist or a Nutritional Psychologist. Please read:

Depression is a Nutritional Disorder at:

Going on a hypoglycemic diet will most probably solve your emotional instability. Please read articles at our web site about the Hypoglycemic diet and look up for "depression". If any more questions please come back. Also discuss with your parents.
