Bipolar Disorder/Bipolar/Depression in family

Question
I am 33 year old lady and looking to start a family in the next 2-3 years. I am concerned any genetic disorders in my family (on mother's side) will be passed on to my children, due to starting a family later. I believe my mother has bipolar disorder, although she has not had confirmed by a doctor. Her grandfather on her father's side committed suicide, and I believe a brother or sister and cousin on the same side of the family committed suicide also. My mother's sister also committed suicide. Suicide thoughts have never come into my mind, however, I have had moments of depression and anxiety and extreme tiredness, otherwise I am quite normal. What do you think the chances are to have a child or children that has any of these disorders?

Answer
Hi Vanessa:

While the genetic factor raises the likelihood of your children inheriting these disorders, it is only raised by about one percent over the regular population if neither you nor the father has any of the disorders.

It is good to think of such things, but I can honestly say I don't believe any problems will be seen with the circumstances you have indicated.
