Question
my daughter is 19 years old and has bipolar. She has with in the last couple of months started having blackouts. When she is having an episoid she will take off and either hours later or days later she will call me crying and saying that she doesn't know where she is or how she got there. I am concernd for her safety of course and the doctors in our area aren't that much help so my question is can her bipolar cause her blackouts?

Answer
HI Lisa,

This is an new one to me. I have never heard of Bipolar people having blackouts. But it is possible that she may have hypoglycemic dips. Bipolar people often have pre-diabetic insulin resistance, which could be responsible for blackouts.

Going on a Hypoglycemic Diet (search our web site) will often resolve the problem, but if it does not, please ask to be referred to a Nutritional Doctor, Clinical Nutritionist or a Nutritional Psychotherapist. Use our "Search our Web site" for more information about terms you enter in the search engine.

much of this applies equally to Bipolar Disorder.
