Bipolar Disorder/Bipolar Disorder II

Question
Hello Dr. Goldberg,

After many years, of medical tests, antidepressants and being told that "nothing" was wrong with me, I finally found a doctor (psychiatrist) who really listened, put all of the pieces together and diagnosed me with Bipolar Disorder II.  I just started taking Lamictal this week.  On one hand, I'm relieved to know there is a reason for how I've been feeling for years, but on the other hand, I'm a bit overwhelmed.  May I ask you some questions please?

1.  Are physical symptoms part of Bipolar Disorder (ie. muscle pain, nausea, lack of appetite, headaches?)  If so, why?

2.  Is Bipolar Disorder "cured" or is it a lifelong condition that requires medication?  (Of course at this point, I welcome the help that medication would offer)

Thank you for your help.

Sandra

Answer

The why cannot be answered, but well over 80% of people with mood disorders, especially bipolar disorder complain of symptoms such as the ones you mention

2. Is Bipolar Disorder "cured" or is it a lifelong condition that requires medication? (Of course at this point, I welcome the help that medication would offer)

Bipolar disorder can be controlled but not cured. Like high blood pressure, diabetes, hypothyroidism, gout, etc the treatment prevents the illness from destroying a person's life, but if the treatment is stopped, the illness reappears in its original form.

Best regards . . .
