Bipolar Disorder/Bipolar and Vicodin

Question
My dentist recently prescribed Vicodin ES for severe tooth pain. I also take trileptal for my bipolar disorder (bipolar II). I've noticed that when taking the Vicodin, it gives almost no pain relief but also seems to give me severe mood swings. I liken it to if I would drink alcohol while off my meds: I'm extremely sensitive and very weepy. Is this a normal reaction for bipolar patients?

Answer
Hi . . .

Narcotics and alcohol can destabilize mood in people with bipolar disorder If the pain is very severe a narcotic can be used, but there may have to be an adjustment in the psychiatric meds.

Best regards . . .
