Question
I am on lithium and trielptol for seizures, mood stabilizing and bipolar disorder. I have been on lithium and bipolar for several years. SInce2002 my behavir has gotten a lot better except twice. Now my doctor wants to lower the level of my lithium from 600mg and eventually take me off of lithium and only e on trielptol. What is your advice on this?

Answer
Hi Loreen:

My advice is to try what your doctor is suggesting.  Since lithium has to be reduced gradually, you will know before you completely stop taking it if your symptoms start becoming worse.  If that happens, notify your doctor and he can again increase the dose.

There must be a good reason your doctor feels you can manage without the lithium.  Trust him but be sure to let him know of any changes you do not feel comfortable with.
