What are the most major effects of Bipolar Disorder on people, other than just mood swings?  Is it possible to tell if someone is suffering with the disorder, without them visiting a doctor?

Other than mood swings the effects of bipolar can be minimal or catastrophic. School failure, lack of occupational success and even suicide can result from untreated or inadequately treated bipolar disorder. Only a psychiatrist can make the diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Anyone with severe depressions should see a psychiatrist for an evaluation, as should people scoring high on the screening examination at:
