Question
A friend of twelve years was recently put on lithibid after having a nervous breakdown. Along with several life changing events (none good) and lose of a child (unborn 3mths). She was told she was bipolar, "a little." I do notice a change in her, but I also know she has never needed this kind of medication before. There is a chance she will have to take lithibid for, "many years." What are the negative sides to long term use?

Answer
It is impossible to know for how long someone will have to take lithium. Some people take it for a couple of years and they they are OK, while others must take it throughout their lives if they wish to keep their mood disorder under control.

A listing for lithium side-effects can be found at: http://bipolar.about.com/cs/sfx/a/sfx_lithium.htm
