Question
Greetings,

I have Bipolar Disorder, I take Lithium to manage it and I was wondering about a few things.

1. How does one know when they have Lithium Toxicity?

2. If I do have it, would I have to go to the hospital for it?

3. If its determined that it is LT, would I be able to go back onto the Lithium once the issue was resolved, or is it a writeoff to ever take again?

Answer
Hi . . .

Lithium toxicity is usually defined as a state in which the lithium blood level is dangerously high. One might suspect such a state by developind increased temor, nausea, vomiting and/or incoordination and slurred speech. Advanced lithium toxicity is life-thtresatening and is often characterized by stupor.

If you suspect yopu have lithium toxicity you should have an immediate lithium blood test . . . at a hospital ER if necessary.

Peopel who have an epsiode of lithium toxicity can take lithium again afer the epsidode has resolved

Best regards . . .

Ivan
