Bipolar Disorder/TRD / VNS Therapy

Question
Dear Dr Goldberg,
I had VNS Model 102 installed in Jan.2007 for TRD. Initially it worked well. About 6 weeks after the implant they went to adjust it and their handheld computer malfunctioned and went to max voltage. It could not be reset or cut off until calling cyberonics for help.I have had daily headaches since plus several other painful side effects. Each time they adjust it it seems to get worse. I was diagnosed in 1978 and have never had a full 9 months in so much mental and physical pain. Have you seen something like this or have any suggestions. My dr thinks it just needs more adjusting. I think after that many months of constant adjusting that isn't the fix and no matter how it is adjusted the daily headaches persist. Sorry to be so long winded ! I do appreciate your help and time ! You are providing a much needed resource !! Thank you kind Sir, Thank you very much !
Sincerely
Mark

Answer
Hi Mark . . .

While I have seen in consultation many patient who have been treated with VNS, I do not consider myself an expert when it comes to this modality.

I think the thing for you to do is to have a consultation with someone who is a true expert in the area of VNS. Dr. Linda Carpenter at Brown University / Butler Hospital would be a wonderful person for you to see. Her contact information is:

Linda Carpenter, MD
