Bipolar Disorder/Zonegran causing stuttering in child

Question
I have a 9-year-old son diagnosed with Bipolar I. He had been on Lamictal 200 mg q.d. for 6 months. His doctor recently increased the dose, and he developed a rash,so he took him off it immediately. His mood swings became really bad, so he put him on Zonegran a few days ago. He has started stuttering.  Is this a side effect of the medication, and if so, is it cause for worry?

Answer
Hi Miki:

Stuttering is not a common side effect of Zonegran.  However, some fatigue and mental confusion can be seen when the medication is started.  This could explain the stuttering.

I would mention it to the doctor, but I don't think there is a need for concern.  Most side effects subside within two to four weeks.  If the stuttering continues past four weeks, then I would consider a possible change.
