Question
My husband strggules with anger and irratiblity. The symptoms of Bi-Polar depression sound like him. However, he does not have periods of hyperactivity. Is it possible to have a mild case of Bi-polar?  Are we looking in the right direction? If not can you point us in the right one?

Answer
The right direction would seem to be a referral to a psychiatrist.  Their expertise is diagnosis and pharmacologic treatment.

There are now 4, I think, variants of bipolar disorder.  In at least one, mania is never present.  And I believe that all classes of bipolar pts [incl those who experience mania] spend far more time depressed than agitated.

I would certainly advise a good diagnostic work-up.  Pls do not have your family doc be the treating physician....you need expert diagnosis first.

I hope that "we" are interested in this - it will be easier to go forward w/ diagnosis and treatment if this is as big a concern to your husband as is is to you.

Good luck and thanks for writing.
