Bipolar Disorder/bipolar meds

Question
Hi Joyce,

I'm not due to see my psychiatrist for a few weeks. I'm currently taking lithium, olanzapine and venlafaxine. We thought the bipolar swings were under control, and thy were for a while (i keep a mood chart). But the past 3 or so weeks i am finding that my moods are all over the place. Yesterday I was on a huge high, and it wasnt caused by anything, and i spent £1000/$2000 online. Couple days before that i had a classic low.

Is it me? Am i doing something wrong? Why am i unstable again?

Answer
Hi Nicky:

Many things can cause your moods to suddenly start cycling again--stress, hormones, a drop or gain in weight that requires your medication be adjusted.

What is important now is to call your doctor and explain what is happening.  Ask that your appointment be moved up.  It appears that whatever the reason, your medication will need adjusting.

If things get too hectic and you can't get in sooner, go to the local ER.  Tell them what you have told me and they will work with you to get things back in balance.
