Question
My sister has just been diagnosed with bipolar by her family Dr. She is tacking effexor &olanzapine. We had a family problem in March & my sister started being very tired and depressed. The dr. put her on effexor and then doubled the dose but she was sleeping more &more. It wasnt untill he put her on the olanzapine that she stopped sleeping now she feels happy and has a lot of energy. My question is can her dr. diagnose bipolar just by her symptons with out any tests? He also found her to be hypoglosimic. Thank you andrea

Answer
I can understand that being diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder is a bit if a shock. But with proper treatment it can be managed very well.

Most doctors diagnose Bipolar Disorder according to certain criteria.

Please see:

http://www.psychnet-uk.com/dsm_iv/bipolar_disorder.htm

Most Bipolar people have hypoglycemia and going on a hypoglycemic diet will markedly improve the symptoms of extreme mood swings.

Your sister should remain under the supervision of a doctor, because nutritional therapy alone will not cure the disorder in most cases.

Also read:

"Nutritional Aspects of Schizophrenia" (Search our web site) much of the information  also applies to Bipolar Disorder.

I hope have been helpful.
