Question

Bird's nest, Ferry Par
I saw this bird's nest today at the Ferry Park, downtown San Francisco. Can you tell me what bird might have built it?

Answer
Interesting. Can't quite tell the size but it looks reasonably large. I have never seen a nest quite like it. What bothers me is the roundness of the nest - too symmetrical, and the smoothness of the side - most birds have stuff sticking out all over, and the placement of the nest right on top of one branch - most birds have more support than that. If it's a small nest there are different issues. Bottom line is, I don't know. Doesn't fit squirrel nest construction either. It almost looks artificial. Any other information you have would be helpful.

CommentThank you so much for your prompt reply. I was struck by the roundness of it too and I wonder if somebody put some kind bowl shaped object there in the hopes a bird might nest there. I will see if I can get another better view of it with my camera and if I do i will follow up with you. There are a lot of bird lovers who come to the park to watch the wild parrots when they are there.
