Birding/Raven v Crow

Question
What is the difference between a raven and a crow?

If I saw one in my yard, would there be someway I could identify it just by looking?

I'm just curious, thanks. :)

Answer
American Crow is about 17 inches. Common Raven is about 24.

The Raven can make a number of noises, the most common being this rattling sort of sound. They can actually learn to talk and immitate other animals. Crows basically just "caw"

The main difference in appearance, other than size, is the beak. The Raven's upper mandible is much thicker. He has a much stronger, fuller upper body, and a more pronounced breast. If you see a Raven, you will know right away that is NOT a crow. It's way bigger.

But this is not an uncommon confusion. They are both the same color, have similiar habits and habitats. They both travel in groups. They are both scavengers.

There are a number of species of both crow and raven. If you live in North America, these are the two you will see the most.

Hope this clears it up

Expertise

I can answer questions about bird identification (by sight or sound), behavior, distribution, population, conservation, mating, nesting, fledging and feeding. I do have some practical knowledge about foreign species, but identification skills are limited in that arena. Bear in mind that as much as I know, it's possible that at least some of you will ask a question that I am unable to answer. At which point I would direct you to wherever or whomever I thought could provide you with that information.

Experience

I have 15 years birding experience in Southern California.

Education/Credentials
My education is in art and photography -but I have a substantial portfolio of nature related work.
