Question
we have a nest in our window that we think is a sparrow nest with 2 eggs as of yesterday there was another egg as far as we can determine it is a blue jay egg will that egg also hatch and if so will it try to kill the other two by forcing them out of the nest or what?? i don't want the little sparrows to go thru that and can i take out that egg  with out any problem  thank you  Fred

Answer
Usually an additional egg in a small bird's nest is from the parasitic Brownheaded Cowbird that does not build its own nest. It is a protected species, but the Wildlife Department usually looks the other way when one of their eggs is removed. They say they have "slippery eggs". The smaller babies usually do not survive if the Cowbird egg hatches. Bluebird Bob. PS - do you have Bluebird Boxes?
