Question
for the past week and a half i have been raising this fledgling.(my children got him form the grips of our cat.)  he seems to be very healthy and has quite the personality!  he is starting to get his feathers and is standing on his legs and can perch on my finger.  i'm at a loss of what to do next.  how do i know when he is ready to go back to the outdoors.  do you think he will inherently just know how to fly.  we are all in love with him and want to do the right thing for him.  do you have any advice?

Answer
I know that it is difficult, but please buy one of those automatic litter boxes (which save litter and do not have your cat digging in its own waste) and keep your cat inside. Cats kill millions of birds and small animals. We have domesticated them, but we have not bred the killer instinct out of them. It will also be safe from coyotes and from birders who live trap them and take them to the pound.

The baby bird is a difficult situation, as there is so much it needed to learn from its parents - how to get food, how to watch for predators, etc., etc. I would call the Audubon Society or the Wildlife Dept. and ask if there is a bird rehabilitator in your area. Bluebird Bob. PS - do you have Bluebird houses?
