Birding/owls

QuestionQUESTION: I have chihuahuas, and I leave them in the backyard (fenced)on nice days. However, there are a couple of owls that can go in the two trees in the backyard. I have seen one there once. I cannot find anything on how to discourage them from those trees. I have thrown bright clothes in the tree. Do you have suggestions for me? Thank-you so much for your time!
ANSWER: Well, a couple of thoughts. First, it is unlikely that the owls will harm the dogs. I have heard all kinds of stories about owls taking away cats and dogs but I have never seen one authentic instance of it actually happening; it is highly unlikely, especially since owls hunt at night and the dogs are out during the day. Second, it is illegal (against federal law) to harass any birds. If they are truly a nuisance, you can call your local wildlife official for advice. However, I think you have little to be concerned about.

QUESTION: Thank-you Roger for your answer. O.K. more to the story.... I was outside weeding and one flew down and hit the side of the house and I think caught a mouse. The dogs were close to me. It was scary though. These are 3.5 pound chihuahuas. Hawks and owls are a concern. I have actually known someone whos chi was taken. I do not intend to harass, just discourage landing in those two trees. They live in the back field. I will call wildlife next. Thank-you.
AnswerAgain, I have heard numerous stories - some incredible, like the dmall dog who was carried into a pine tree by its sweater by an owl. But I have never ever seen any actual evidence this has happened. It is possible but highly unlikely. Even big Great Horned Owls weigh only 3-4 pounds and would have a very difficult time with something that weighed as much as they did. They might take a squirrel or small rabbit, but a dog has teeth. I have had lots of questions about this and have asked questioners to send me any evidence they have that this has actually happened and especially if their dog or cat is attacked and I have yet to get a response. So, don't be too concerned.
