Question
Dear Julie,
I am hoping you can help me. I live in a residential area of Boston , MA and have a problem with sparrows nesting in sills where AC units are located. The nest has hatched and the babies are extremely vocal. I will not harm them however how long before they leave nest and what the most effective deterent for future nestings. Please help me...I'm losing sleep...Thanks, Paulette

Answer
It might sound too simple to be effective, but try purchasing a few of those owl decoys and setting them up outside your house.

"Extremely vocal" -I've never heard it put that way before. House Sparrows are probably the loudest and most obnoxious birds during their nesting. In big cities like Boston, New York, Los Angeles -they've actually adapted and become louder so that they can compete with the urban noises.

Expertise

I can answer questions about bird identification (by sight or sound), behavior, distribution, population, conservation, mating, nesting, fledging and feeding. I do have some practical knowledge about foreign species, but identification skills are limited in that arena. Bear in mind that as much as I know, it's possible that at least some of you will ask a question that I am unable to answer. At which point I would direct you to wherever or whomever I thought could provide you with that information.

Experience

I have 15 years birding experience in Southern California.

Organizations
Audubon Society

Education/Credentials
My education is in art and photography -but I have a substantial portfolio of nature related work.
