Birding/wild birds

Question
I have a problem with herons eating my Koi fish in our pond. I have artificial herons "standing guard" but it was suggested that we string fishing wire from our trees around the pond. Will this cause injury to any small birds that fly through our yard? Can smaller birds see the line?
We were told that the heron, with its large wing span, will be frightened away when its wings touch the fishing line. Thanks.

Answer
There's a netting you can purchase that goes over the pond and should protect the koi from being eaten. That is the only preventative method I am aware of.

Here is a good article on the subject: http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/ponds/Lawler_Predatory_birds.html

Expertise

I can answer questions about bird identification (by sight or sound), behavior, distribution, population, conservation, mating, nesting, fledging and feeding. I do have some practical knowledge about foreign species, but identification skills are limited in that arena. Bear in mind that as much as I know, it's possible that at least some of you will ask a question that I am unable to answer. At which point I would direct you to wherever or whomever I thought could provide you with that information.

Experience

I have 15 years birding experience in Southern California.

Organizations
Audubon Society

Education/Credentials
My education is in art and photography -but I have a substantial portfolio of nature related work.
