Birding/preventing nesting in wreath

Question
Is there some material that could be placed inside the 'cavity' of a wreath, so as to keep the local House Finches from building a nest? Neighbor wants to keep the wreath, but needs use of his front door. Would like to give him an alternative to taking it down entirely after the current Finch family leaves. Thanks.

Answer
I have no idea what to tell you. Finches -I'm assuming by the time of year that this is a House Finch- tend to nest wherever they want and they're pretty hard to stop.

Could he put something decorative in that space? My mother-in-law makes floral wreaths and she often sticks a centerpiece in there.

Sorry-

Expertise

I can answer questions about bird identification (by sight or sound), behavior, distribution, population, conservation, mating, nesting, fledging and feeding. I do have some practical knowledge about foreign species, but identification skills are limited in that arena. Bear in mind that as much as I know, it's possible that at least some of you will ask a question that I am unable to answer. At which point I would direct you to wherever or whomever I thought could provide you with that information.

Experience

I have 15 years birding experience in Southern California.

Organizations
Audubon Society

Education/Credentials
My education is in art and photography -but I have a substantial portfolio of nature related work.
