Birding/Baby Robin Eggs

Question
Can you tell me if a Robin will abandon her baby eggs after laying them, I have a robin that had 2 sets of babies and she was there all the time. This last set she laid and I haven't seen her at the nest. There are 4 eggs in the nest.

Answer
I know of no reason that a Robin would voluntarily abandon her eggs. She may have fallen ill or been killed. With Robins, nesting usually involves both the male and the female. The male usually tends after the fledglings while the female is incubating the next brood. Keep your eyes peeled. Maybe they will return.

Expertise

I can answer questions about bird identification (by sight or sound), behavior, distribution, population, conservation, mating, nesting, fledging and feeding. I do have some practical knowledge about foreign species, but identification skills are limited in that arena. Bear in mind that as much as I know, it's possible that at least some of you will ask a question that I am unable to answer. At which point I would direct you to wherever or whomever I thought could provide you with that information.

I have 15 years birding experience in Southern California.
