Birding/Mockingbird

Question
My husband came home from work and told me that we have baby birds in our hibiscus tree. Upon closer examination we found that they were Mockingbirds! The mother was feeding the three babies while we watched, amazing to see them so close! My question is, how do I keep the crows away? They keep flying around the tree and zooming in towards the nest. I know I am not supposed to meddle with nature, but these little guys are just so adorable!! We have named them Fat Boy, Squirt and Fuzzy Feet. Thanks for your help!

Answer
Mockingbirds should be able to keep crows away with no help. I've seen them take on hawks, ravens etc. When they are protecting young, they will take on anything -and both parents participate. They should be fine. That isn't to say that nothing will happen, but generally mockingbirds hold their own fairly well.

Expertise

I can answer questions about bird identification (by sight or sound), behavior, distribution, population, conservation, mating, nesting, fledging and feeding. I do have some practical knowledge about foreign species, but identification skills are limited in that arena. Bear in mind that as much as I know, it's possible that at least some of you will ask a question that I am unable to answer. At which point I would direct you to wherever or whomever I thought could provide you with that information.

Experience

I have 15 years birding experience in Southern California.

Organizations
Audubon Society

Education/Credentials
My education is in art and photography -but I have a substantial portfolio of nature related work.
