Question
we have recently moved to southeastern coastal NC. We have a bird that we cannot identify. It is red with a black or dark ring around the neck. Do you know what it is? Thanks.

Answer
There are several red birds in your area, the Scarlet Tanager. the Summer Tanager and the Northern Cardinal, but the black ring around the neck really throws me and I have reviewed my Birds of North America field guide. The Northern Cardinal does have a black mask and chin. Non-native birds do occasionally come in from other areas. If you have or are interested in Bluebirds contact me at walshaw1@cox.net.
