Birding/unknown bird

Question
I was visiting in Woodstock Ontario last night. I saw a bird,
colour, similar to a female Cardinal. Brown with red highlights.
size,   slightly larger than any Cardinal I have seen.
head,   black with what appeared to be a greenish tinge.
beak,   similar to Cardinal.
This bird stayed in plain view in the backyard for at least fifteen minutes. I have been an amateur bird watcher since grade seven. Our teacher made quite an impression on me. I am at a complete loss as to the bird's identity.

Answer
I am a Bluebird expert and not so on a lot of other birds. The black head really confuses me too. Northern Orioles and Rose Breasted Grosbeaks have black heads, but the rest of the description does not fit. Try bird books at your library.
