Birding/birds living in house

Question
We have birds living on the 2nd floor of our house (in between the walls and ceiling)  When we when up to the attic to see if there were birds living there, we didn't find a nest, but when we looked from the outside (on the roof), we found a nest.  Usually I wouldn't mind the birds (I've noticed they have been coming for a few years now) except now i've noticed a crack in the wall, which is from the birds pushing and scratching against the wall.  It's getting worse and worse, as I've even noticed bugs and small insects coming into the room.  Do you have any suggestions to how I can fix this problem?

Answer
Not know what type of bird or being intimately familiar with the layout of your home, I can't be sure. But if you could get them out, you could keep them out by placing wire mesh over the space they've been using for entry.

Depending on where you live, there are groups -not animal control- that will help you remove pest animals without causing them harm.

Expertise

I can answer questions about bird identification (by sight or sound), behavior, distribution, population, conservation, mating, nesting, fledging and feeding. I do have some practical knowledge about foreign species, but identification skills are limited in that arena. Bear in mind that as much as I know, it's possible that at least some of you will ask a question that I am unable to answer. At which point I would direct you to wherever or whomever I thought could provide you with that information.

Experience

I have 15 years birding experience in Southern California.

Organizations
Audubon Society

Education/Credentials
My education is in art and photography -but I have a substantial portfolio of nature related work.
