Birding/identifying bird's nest

Question
QUESTION: What types of birds on the southeast coast make mud and stick nest 4 1/2 wide and about 2 1/2 deep more mud than
sticks

ANSWER: Sorry for the delay.

Is the nest on the ground or in a bush or tree? Is it gourd shaped and has a small hole for entry, or is it cup shaped and on the ground?

If it is on the ground, is it near the ocean or in a more grassy, woodsy area?

Because the answer would vary greatly.

QUESTION: the nest as a cup shape and was in a bush it had more mud than twigs.

Answer
Thrushes build mud-lined cup nests. But nests made primarily of mud usually belong to Swallows or Martins. Given your location, I'd say Barn Swallow.

Have you observed any birds coming or going from the nest, or is it now abandoned?

Would it be possible to take a picture and send it to me? Even a low quality image would be helpful -like from your cell phone.

Expertise

I can answer questions about bird identification (by sight or sound), behavior, distribution, population, conservation, mating, nesting, fledging and feeding. I do have some practical knowledge about foreign species, but identification skills are limited in that arena. Bear in mind that as much as I know, it's possible that at least some of you will ask a question that I am unable to answer. At which point I would direct you to wherever or whomever I thought could provide you with that information.

Experience

I have 15 years birding experience in Southern California.

Organizations
Audubon Society

Education/Credentials
My education is in art and photography -but I have a substantial portfolio of nature related work.
