Question
I've been told snakes don't like hemp. Is this correct? If so,will a rope circled around the full length of the bluebird house pole deter a black snake?
This was an old cowboy myth. I am told it does not work. A 36 inch "coolie" hat type metal guard does work, or you can make a skirt of 1/4 inch garden mesh, but then you have to keep an eye on it and remove the snake, as when a snake is in the mesh the birds won't feed their young. The mesh works as all of the scales on a snake go one way like the shingles on a roof, and it will catch the biggest snakes that we have.
