Birding/Egret behavior

Question
I observed a Great Egret walking in some landscaping by a busy road outside our neighborhood two days in a row.  What was it looking for?  What kind of food would it be?  We frequently see Egrets and other water birds in and near the water features in our neighborhood, but I have never seen one in a dry place like that. Thanks.

Answer
Fish. Ponds in people's yards or small man-made bodies of water. An egret will walk as far as a mile through residential neighborhoods, if it has reason to believe someone has fancy goldfish or expensive koi in their yard to munch on. And they often look quite out of place.

Expertise

I can answer questions about bird identification (by sight or sound), behavior, distribution, population, conservation, mating, nesting, fledging and feeding. I do have some practical knowledge about foreign species, but identification skills are limited in that arena. Bear in mind that as much as I know, it's possible that at least some of you will ask a question that I am unable to answer. At which point I would direct you to wherever or whomever I thought could provide you with that information.

Experience

I have 15 years birding experience in Southern California.

Organizations
Audubon Society

Education/Credentials
My education is in art and photography -but I have a substantial portfolio of nature related work.
