Birding/general question about swallows

Question
Hello
We have for a couple of months had swallows in our garage in a nest over the electric meter, there were two but a few weeks ago one went missing,we are left with the female who has laid 5 eggs and has been on the nest for a good week now,has she any chance of rearing any of the young on her own?(always presuming the eggs hatch)it seems a lot to ask!
                  Regards Barbara

Answer
With swallows, generally both parents participate in the feeding and caring for the young. But I see no reason why the mother could not handle the job herself. With many species of birds, the father doesn't participate at all. But don't be surprised if Dad returns.

Expertise

I can answer questions about bird identification (by sight or sound), behavior, distribution, population, conservation, mating, nesting, fledging and feeding. I do have some practical knowledge about foreign species, but identification skills are limited in that arena. Bear in mind that as much as I know, it's possible that at least some of you will ask a question that I am unable to answer. At which point I would direct you to wherever or whomever I thought could provide you with that information.

Experience

I have 15 years birding experience in Southern California.

Organizations
Audubon Society

Education/Credentials
My education is in art and photography -but I have a substantial portfolio of nature related work.
