Birding/Red Breasted Robin

Question
How many clutches do robins have per year? Do they nest when they migrate south in the winter?

Answer
Robins can have up to three clutches a year. They will continue to feed young that have already fledged even when there are new eggs in the nest.

Mating season for most birds can begin as early as February and end as late as August. The only exception would be owls, who begin mating in December. As far as I know, they are the only birds that mate during the winter.

Robins typically begin mating in April and end in July. Keep in mind that incubation is only two weeks and they will leave the nest about two weeks after hatching. So each clutch takes about a month.

Hope this helps you,

Expertise

I can answer questions about bird identification (by sight or sound), behavior, distribution, population, conservation, mating, nesting, fledging and feeding. I do have some practical knowledge about foreign species, but identification skills are limited in that arena. Bear in mind that as much as I know, it's possible that at least some of you will ask a question that I am unable to answer. At which point I would direct you to wherever or whomever I thought could provide you with that information.

Experience

I have 15 years birding experience in Southern California.

Organizations
Audubon Society

Education/Credentials
My education is in art and photography -but I have a substantial portfolio of nature related work.
