Question

babies 2010
I have 2 Blue bird couples, one occupies a nesting box in our front yard and one in our backyard.  I have a mealworm box for each pair and feed them twice a day.  They both have 5 babies in the box they are feeding.  I was wondering if we go away for a week, they will not have the mealworms they are accustomed to, if they and their babies will be able to find enough food on their own.

Thank you for your response.

Michelle

Answer
I have been raising Bluebirds and other small cavity nesters on my 100 box 5 mile line and in my yard for 20 years and I have never fed mealworm one. We feed birds for our own enjoyment - they really don't need it. If you stop even though you may have spoiled them a bit they will just fill in with their natural insect diet. If you will send me your mailing address I will send you my free 20 page Bluebird book. The address will be used only to mail the book. If you are concerned about this google Bluebird Bob Walshaw to see the work that I do. Good luck, Bob Walshaw.
