Birding/bluebird eggs

Question
bluebird house has had 30 or more successful broods in 20 years.
last month I found the eggs on the ground, just as though something lifted them up and dropped them to the ground.  Very upsetting, what should I try to protect against?
Thanks,
John

Answer
Unfortunately there is not much you can do if certain birds, especially House Wrens have moved into the area. Were holes punched into the eggs - a sure sign of House Wrens. House sparrows will throw them out but they usually smash them, often in the nest. And at times many other birds will do this. There was a post on our yahoo listserv tonight where a Red Headed Woodpecker was throwing a Great Crested Flycatcher's eggs out. House Wrens like woods and brush. You may have to move the box to a more open area even after all those years. This is why on page 19 in my book I advise having 3 or 4 boxes as you will always lose some. they have many predators, even other Bluebirds at times. If you will send your mailing address to me at walshaw1@cox.net I will send you my free 20 page Bluebird book. The address will be used only to mail the book. If this concerns you google Bluenird Bird Walshaw to see the work that I do. Good luck. Bob Walshaw.
