Question
QUESTION: We had a bluebird build a nest and raise baby birds in a birdhouse on our deck.  There are 2 babies and one left the nest today.  The second, smaller bird, is still in the nest and we have not seen the parents since the first baby flew.  The parents won't abandon the second bird, will they?  Are they just staying away to encourage it to leave too?

ANSWER: Hopefully the parents are ignoring it to get it to leave. However if it is a runt or a weakling and unable to leave the parents may have abandoned it which is nature's way. It does not seem kind but if this is the case they know not to put a weakling into the gene pool. Just be patient and wait and see. When whatever takes place remove the nest and the same or another pair may nest again.
