Birding/detouring mud sparrow

Question
We would like to prevent mud sparrows from making a nest above our picture window.  What works? They are very persistent.  We have lots of bird houses available all around the house.
Thanks

Answer
I have never heard of a mud sparrow. I suspect you are referring to Cliff Swallows. They will not nest in bird houses because they make mud nests. It is illegal to disturb them as they are protected by federal law if they have already started building a mud nest. But after they are done nesting you can remove the nest and put a screen or other exclosure over the area to deter them next season.
