Birding/bird learning

Question
Hi, I have a big problem in my yard with mainly robins. They think that every single bit of my property is a toilet for them. I tried all kinds of deterents that dont work, so now I have a pellet gun. Since knocking off about 3 in the yard, I've seen a bit of a decline in the bird droppings all over the place (though not enough), and a few less birds in the yard. Considering that there were probably 20 "regulars" hanging around the yard and now I dont see many, is it possible that the birds have learned after hearing and seeing a couple get shot? Will they actually learn to stay away from the yard and find another place to haunt?  I consider them dumb creatures, but of course I'm sure they do have some learning capability.

Answer
I have to begin by telling you that it is illegal - federal law - to shoot birds. They are protected by the Migratory Bird Act. (Except for hunting season for ducks and geese, etc.) I cannot believe that the birds are causing such a mess that you feel you have to kill them. No, they will not learn from your actions.
There has been a 30% decline in the number of songbirds in the past 30 or so years. Please refrain from shooting them. Hang mylar tinsel around the area to scare them - much more effective, and legal.
