Birding/Baby Owls

Question
Hi there, I was wondering at what age owls start to hoot?  And at how old they
can start to fly and walk?  But the main thing I wanted to know is when they
can hoot.  It is for a children's book I am planning on writing.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and hope you have the answers!

Regards
Andrea

Answer
Some species start to hoot (the adult hoot call) when they are about a year old. They might make noises before that, but the real hoot comes a year (or more - depends on the kind of owl) later. Many owls do not hoot, though, for example the Barn Owl and Screech Owl. Only some owls hoot and others make other noises. Most leave the nest about six weeks of age and fly shortly - a few days later. Walk - they really don't walk. Roger Lederer at Ornithology.com
