Birding/Bird Nest

Question
I live in Los Angeles,Ca. and today I had a termite inspection of my house. The inspector called my up to the attic to show me a large nest below the gable vent (which is 18 in tall/12 in wide). This nest is about 3 ft high and 4 ft long, consisting of mainly grass. The opening to the attic is only about 2 inches between the slats. What type of bird do you think would build such a large nest? Sorry I don't have a more exotic bird question for you!

Answer
Sorry, nests are not my expertise, much less so in the West Coast, but I have a feeling this is not a bird nest, but that of a squirrel or other roedent. If there were feathers on the nest, or other particular kind of debris, describe them to me to see if there is anyway we can come to a conclusion.
