Birding/Habbits of Owls and Hawks

Question
We have a pair of Red Tailed Hawks nesting in the woods behind our house this year. We also have Bared Owls that have nested in the same general area for several years. Our neighbors has a miniature dachshund and they are worried that one of these birds might look on their dog as a meal. Should they be worried?

Answer
The simple answer is no. It is extremely rare for owls or hawks or even eagles to attack domestic animals. I've had cats for 20 years and they roam around my property which has nesting hawks (as well as foxes, racoons, sknunks, etc.) with no problem. Not that it never happens, but it would be very very unusual. Roger Lederer
