Birding/Hawks

Question
I want to appreciate the beauty of all creatures, yet the hawks flying overhead while I have my 5lb puppy dog outside is scaring me. What vocalization do these birds make and what is their territory? Any suggestions to protecting my beloved pet?

Answer
It is extremely rare that a hawk will attack a dog or cat. I have not been able to find any evidence of confirmed attacks. It might happen, but it would be VERY unusual. Especially if the dog is in a backyard. Their (hawk)territory is very large - several square miles - and their voice depends on what species they are. But even the biggest hawks can only lift about 2-3 pounds at most. Roger Lederer at Ornithology.com
