Birding/cardinal fledgling

Question
I have been caring for a fledgling for a week now.  It has grown from 22g to 29g and its swelled eye has healed.  I am hand feeding it a paste with a syringe.  When will it be able to eat on its own?  How do I teach it to eat on its own?  What is the best thing to get it to eat?

Answer
The best thing to do is to get it to your local wildlife rehabilitation center and give it to the experienced people there. If that is not possible, go to www.ornithology.com/rehab.html for information on caring for young birds. I appreciate our concern for the bird but it is very difficult to raise a young wild bird.
