Birding/painting a birdbath

Question
Hi, Roger,
I have a metal birdbath that is in desperate need of painting.  Not only is the rust on the inside of the bowl unsightly, I don't know what the effect of the rusty water will be on the birds.  We are planning to sandblast the thing and start over.  I've searched for information on what sort of paint will be safe for the birds, and can find information on sealers for birdbaths, but not paint.  Have you any suggestions?  I have a tremendous variety and number of birds in my organic garden, and need to make sure I'm not inadvertently poisoning them.  Thank you in advance for your help.  Kelly Kopin  Erie, PA.

Answer
Hi Kelly. First, rusty water won't hurt the birds - iron goes right through their system as it does ours. If you repaint it, use any paint that is meant for water use, such as marine paint. It will leach very little and thus be safe for birds. For the first few weeks after repainting, however, I would change the water at least daily just to be sure. Good luck.
