Birds--General/broken leg - parakeet

Question
My budgie 3 yrs approx. has broken her leg.  I have moved her to an aquarium and situated her favorite toys etc.  She seems to be getting along well, eats parsley and her seed.  She is breathing harder I think because she is working harder.  Is there a way I can tape the let to help her?  Her leg drags behind the toes have no response when I hold her.  She is very calm still in my hand, doesn't panic and does not seem to have pain.  Any Advice?

Answer
Hi, Debbie,

You cannot fix the leg yourself.  You need to get your keet to a certified avian vet ASAP so the leg can be set properly.  If you wait, the leg won't be able to be set and the bird will be handicapped all its life.  Not good for an animal that spends all its life on its legs.  A vet visit is essential in that perhaps the leg isn't actually broken and/or there could be other damage you aren't aware of.  Please get your bird to the bird vet ASAP.

An all-seed diet is an unhealthy diet for a bird.  Your bird needs a varied diet of healthy, nutritious human foods, along with pelleted bird food, and feed seed sparingly.  Seed is high in fat and low in nutritional value.  Parsley doesn't have much value either.  I recommend kale, collard/mustard greens, which are healthier.  Visit my website for more info on proper diet:

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
