Hi tara , i have 2 cockateils ..my female laid 3 eggs and now she is sitting on them faithfully...my male sits sometimes ...it is mostly her,though...when do they hatch???? also ,how long do i let the parents feed them before i start hand feeding them?????  i dont know much about this subject ..this is my first time having cockateils...thank you always in jesus lynn

Answer
Hi, Lynn,

I'm not Tara!  I found your question in the question pool this morning.  I don't know why it was not answered when you submitted it.

If these eggs are fertile and they develop properly during incubation, they should start hatching 18 days AFTER incubation began.  Incubation doesn't always begin with the first laid egg; it usually begins when the second egg is laid.

I normally pull tiel babies for handfeeding when they are about 10 days old.  If you don't know much about this, you have a lot to learn QUICKLY!  Visit my website for more information:  www.angelfire.com/falcon/birdinfo/index.html.  www.birdchannel.com is also a good website.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
