Birds--General/lovebird babies

Question
My lovebirds had 4 babies. I know the first 2 were born 12/13 & 12/15. The other 2 came about 4 days or so after that. I'm afraid to hand feed since I've never done it before. The parents are doing great though. My question is, if I leave the parents to feed them, when would I take them out of the parent's cage?

Answer
Hi, Stacy,

I found your question in the question pool this morning.  I don't know why it was not answered when you submitted it.

You would remove the babies from the parent's cage once the babies are completely weaned, are drinking on their own, and are able to successfully maneuver about a cage.

Be aware that if you don't handfeed these babies, they will not be tame enough to handle and you may have difficulty finding them homes (if this is your plan).

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
