Answer
Hi, Mikayla,

You haven't provided enough information in your post for me to help determine what the problem might be.  Your bird could have pulled a muscle or tendon in his leg/shoulder as a result of getting toenails stuck in a toy/other (pulling to free himself), he could have received a leg injury from some other source, he could have a vitamin/mineral deficiency, etc.  If the foot/leg is broken, it will just hang from that point...bird will have no control over the broken part at all.  He must be in some discomfort if he keeps biting at it.  Also, sometimes when a bird does this biting, it can actually be something other than the foot/leg that is the problem, but the bird thinks that if he bites at the leg/foot, the discomfort will go away.  I recommend you take your bird to a certified avian veterinarian for a diagnosis, possible treatment.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
